Import & Export

Bring your existing research into Academe and export your work in whatever format the next step needs.

Importing papers

Academe accepts papers and references from every source that matters:

  • PDF uploadDrag and drop. Metadata extracts automatically: title, authors, abstract, and year.
  • DOIPaste a DOI for full metadata and, when available, the open-access full text.
  • Preprint identifierImport preprints directly by their public identifier.
  • Biomedical identifierImport biomedical literature by PMID.
  • BibTeXUpload a .bib file to import your entire bibliography at once.
  • Zotero / MendeleyConnect your reference manager and sync.

Bibliographic files (.ris / .bib / .nbib)

Reference files exported from EndNote, Mendeley, Rayyan, or other managers drop straight into Academe. Upload the file and the bibliography imports as a set of papers with full metadata: title, authors, venue, year, and abstract where present.

  • .bib (BibTeX)The standard LaTeX bibliography format. Preserves @article, @book, @inproceedings, and friends.
  • .risRIS-format bibliographies, as exported by most commercial reference managers.
  • .nbibA common biomedical export format. Useful for reviews built on a database search.
  • Zotero-specific importIf your papers live in Zotero with synced PDFs, use the Zotero integration instead. It pulls the files too.
Bibliographic imports bring in metadata, not full text. To add the PDF alongside, upload the PDF in the same drag action. Academe matches it to the reference by title and DOI.

Importing notes

  • Markdown (.md)Full formatting preserved.
  • Plain text (.txt)Imported as editable notes.
  • Word (.docx)Converted to the editor format with headings, lists, and basic formatting preserved.

Exporting your work

  • PDFFormatted document with citations and bibliography included.
  • Word (.docx)Editable and compatible with Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
  • LaTeX (.tex)Clean source with proper citation commands and a companion .bib file.
  • Markdown (.md)Plain Markdown for use in other tools.
  • BibTeX (.bib)Full bibliography, or just the references cited in a specific document.

Bulk operations

Import or export in bulk. Drag a folder of PDFs to import them all, or select multiple documents to export as a ZIP. Large libraries process in the background; keep working while papers are being added.
